Can you colour any beard?
In principle, you can colour any beard, but if you keep your beard very short, your efforts will be short-lived. As you regularly trim back your beard hair, very little of the beard colour remains visible. The advice is to colour your beard when it is 2.5 centimetres or longer. This ensures maximum visible results and colouring that is better retained.
What dye do you use to colour your beard?
In theory, you could use ordinary hair dye to colour your beard. However, as the skin on your face is much more sensitive, it may react differently. It is best to opt for a special beard dye. This paint does not grow out, but fades.
This makes for a natural look. Because say it yourself: outgrowth in your beard looks at least a little remarkable, doesn’t it? Special beard paint is also a bit thicker and easier to apply.
What colour do you choose?
For convenience’s sake, I assume you want as natural a result as possible. You achieve this by choosing a beard colour that is as close to your natural hair colour as possible. As a rule of thumb, remember to deviate a maximum of two shades. This is because you can never completely hide the actual colour of your beard hair.
Do you choose a colour that is too dark? This can give your face a harsh look. Do you have dark hair of your own? Choose a dark brown beard colour instead of black. In turn, a colour that is too light can make your skin look paler and give you a less expressive look. Stay close to your own colour even with a light beard.
Colouring your beard: preparation
As a Beard Man myself, I believe in mostly natural ingredients and especially careful use. It is not always possible to use products of natural origin. This is also the case when colouring your beard. All the more important is good preparation. One of the most important tips is not to wash your beard prior to dyeing. This ensures that the dye will adhere better and that your skin and beard hair suffer less from the treatment.
Combing your beard beforehand is advisable (these are the best beard combs). Dust and remaining particles are efficiently removed this way. It is wise to apply a layer of Vaseline around your beard to prevent the beard dye from adhering to the skin around your beard.
What kind of brush do you use for colouring your beard?
If you buy a special beard dye, you usually get a brush with it. An ordinary hair dye brush is much too big for this precision job. With such a brush you cannot avoid unintentionally colouring parts of your face. Don’t have a beard dye brush? Then use a toothbrush to apply the paint.

The step-by-step plan for colouring your beard
Do you need a concrete step-by-step plan for colouring your beard? I have briefly listed everything below.
- Read the instructions on the beard dye pack so that you know how to proceed.
- Does the packaging contain both a base colour and a colour developer? Mix these together before you get started. This will be indicated on the packaging.
- Gently apply the paint to your beard by moving the brush back and forth.
- Let the colour sink in. The packaging will indicate how long you should take to do this.
- Rinse your beard under lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel.
- Do not wash your dyed beard for the next two days.
How is the result?
Are you satisfied? Congratulations! For the next few weeks you will be walking around with a beard to be proud of. Is your beard too dark for your taste? Wash it immediately with beard shampoo. Is it too light? Repeat the above steps immediately.
