There are more than enough reasons to grow a beard. Many men choose it because it is trendy and the ultimate form of masculinity. Besides, women see a man with a beautiful, full beard as healthy and strong. And therefore attractive! Your beard also protects you from external influences. Take UV radiation as an example. However, you can only benefit from a beard if you take good care of it. Here are 5 tips for combing your beard.

Combing and the other steps of beard care

Before I get to the tips, I’d like to briefly explain the place combing your beard has in the grooming ritual. I have listed the steps below:

  1. Trim your beard as needed to keep it in the right shape and length.
  2. Wash your beard with water and a good beard shampoo. The natural oils moisturise your skin, which also promotes hair growth.
  3. Dry your beard hair.
  4. Comb your beard carefully. This way you will also stimulate hair growth and know how to shape your beard.

1. Use a wooden beard comb

Beard combs come in all shapes and sizes. You can do yourself and your beard a big favour by choosing a wooden comb. Plastic beard combs often create static electricity that makes your beard hair look matted. This won’t do your look any good! Wood is a natural material that won’t cause you such problems. Do you have thick hair and a full beard? Then choose a wooden beard comb with teeth that are a little further apart.

2. Comb your beard daily

You also go through your head hair with a comb or brush every day. Why not go through your beard hair? You can comb your beard hair at any time of the day. Try to do this no more than four times. As with your head hair, combing can promote hair growth because it stimulates the hair follicles. If you comb too often, you can damage your hair and even slow down its growth. You only need to run the comb through your beard a few times to achieve the desired effect.

3. Comb in the direction of your whiskers

Always comb your beard in the direction of your hair. So start with your comb at the top and make gentle downward combing movements. Do you notice a lot of stray hairs while combing? That’s a sign that it’s time to trim your beard.

4. Comb your beard only when it is dry

Especially if you have a longer and/or fuller beard, you’ve probably noticed that it gets a little heavier when you wash it. This is because your hair becomes porous when exposed to water. Therefore, it absorbs water and gains weight. Because wet hair is porous, it is also more susceptible to damage. When combing, your beard hair can break off more quickly. So always make sure your beard is dry before you comb it. You really can’t wait until your beard hair is dry? Then at least use a coarse-toothed comb.

5. Comb gently and use beard oil if necessary.

The longer and fuller your beard gets, the greater the risk of it getting tangled. Do you encounter them while combing? Then don’t use too much force! Pulling on your beard hair can even cause you to pull it out. If you do this regularly, your beard will get thinner and thinner after a while. If you’re struggling with tangles, always start at the bottom of your beard and gently comb back up each time you’ve untangled a bit.

Especially for tangles, beard oil is a godsend. Thanks to this product, which is basically a conditioner, you can glide your beard comb through your hair more easily.

Combing your beard: prerequisite for a beautiful, healthy beard

Grow a beard to save a little time every morning? It’s not that easy! Even though you no longer need to shave, a beard still requires proper attention and care. Combing is an important part of this. You can start when you reach a beard of about three months.
