The first beard hair is showing itself and it’s about time to tackle those long stray hair. As with everything we do for the first time, we need time to master the skill. The same goes for shaving. After all, how exactly do you use such a razor or shaver? Not to worry, The Beard Man has you covered!

First time shaving: which shaving products do you need?

From a razor to shaving foam

First of all, you need the right shaving products. Chances are you haven’t bought a shaver yet. A shaver can be quite pricey for you as a teenager. Or maybe you can borrow your father’s razor? A trip to the local supermarket or browsing through UK online stores can give you an idea about these.

With both a razor and a shaver, you need the same shaving products. Think about:

  • Razor or shaver
  • Shaving foam
  • Lukewarm water
  • Clean dry towel

What’s good to know before you start

Avoid irritated skin

When shaving, there is always the danger of irritated skin as a result. Annoying, because you don’t want to show up with lumps and red skin. As a teenager – or when shaving for the first time – the risk of irritated skin is greater.

This is because the underlying skin is not yet used to it. In addition, the risk of skin irritation after shaving increases when using a razor, as it cuts the hair tightly against the skin. It may give the smoothest result, but if you have the luxury of starting with a razor, it is highly recommended.

First time shaving: step by step

  1. Wet your face with lukewarm water. This opens the pores which makes shaving easier and reduces the risk of irritated skin.
  1. Shaving foam: apply some shaving cream in your palms and spread it over your face
  1. Using the razor: pull the skin taut and gently pull the razor from the top down. Always shave in the same direction as the hair grows. Proceed slowly, as such a razor can be awfully sharp.
  1. Using a shaver: With a Philips shaver, slowly rotate the shaving head in circles. If you use a Braun shaver, work from top to bottom.
  2. Rinse in between shaves: With both a razor and shaver, rinse loose hairs under the tap between shaves.

After shaving

When finished, rinse the face with cold water and pat dry with a clean towel. Using cold water closes the pores. Afterwards, use an aftershave or a good beard oil to soothe the skin and prevent skin irritation. Finally, it is important to know that you cannot use razor blades more than 1 -2 times. Before use, always disinfect the blades to avoid nasty inflammations.

TIP: When drying off, it is important to always dab and not rub. This will prevent irritated skin.
