Do you suffer from itching and red bumps after shaving? Annoying, because it can be irritating. Even more irksome when you have an extra reason to look good. There are several causes of the itching and additional bumps. Wondering where it goes wrong and how to fix it? The Beard Man shares his secrets with you.
Causes of itching and lumps after shaving
The itching you experience after shaving and the small bumps that appear are often caused by:
- Shaving against the direction of hair growth: you shave hair close to the root and there is more contact with the skin. This causes irritation, but also increases the risk of ingrown beard hair which can be incredibly painful.
- Dry razor shave: to shave with a traditional razor or razor, you just need a little shaving gel, foam and water. This way, the blade glides smoothly over the skin without any resistance. Good quality shaving products are available in UK online stores and supermarkets. If you dig around, you can find plenty of good value purchases.
- Ingrown beard hair: the hairs then grow back into the skin. This not only causes skin irritation, but can also become quite inflamed.
Tips to prevent skin irritation after shaving
Now that we know the causes, we also know what not to do to prevent red bumps, itching and other forms of skin irritation after shaving. Do not shave in the opposite direction AND use a little shaving gel when using a traditional razor. But there is more you can do. Below are tips from The Beard Man:
- Do you like to shave dry? Moisten the beard hair at least a little with lukewarm water before shaving. This softens the beard hair and opens the pores, making it easier to shave them off.
- Obviously, but oh so important: always use a clean razor or shaver by disinfecting it before use. Replace the razor after 1 -2 uses.
- Use a facial scrub: to remove dead skin cells. This will loosen stuck hair. Never scrub too hard on your face and choose a scrub with small grains, otherwise there is a chance you will damage the underlying skin and irritate it.
- Wash face with cold water: you do this after shaving to close the pores.
- Use beard oil: a good beard oil has a soothing effect on the skin, which is exactly what it needs.
Do you often suffer from skin irritations after shaving?
One skin is not the other. Even when following the tips above, you may still suffer from irritated skin after shaving, which is bothersome to say the least! In this case, you can opt to leave a stubble trim. Trimming stubble does not cause irritation for most men, but shaving does. In that case, you need a beard trimmer and leave the razor alone.
