Sideburns: Some people loathe them, for others they are an essential part of a trendy look. Throughout history, the popularity of sideburns has changed a lot. Two hundred years ago they were very popular and pop idol Elvis also revived the trend in the 1960s.

You can also see the sideburns. That is, if you take good care of them. Since they are actually beard hairs, you care for them in the same way. So it’s important to wash them regularly with a special beard shampoo and moisturise them with a beard oil. Trimming your sideburns is also an important part of the grooming routine. Generally, sideburns have short hairs and sharp lines. What’s the best way to trim them? The Beardman will tell you!

1. Use your index fingers to determine the correct length

These days, there are countless chop styles you can think of. Do you have short hair? Then it’s best to keep your sideburns only halfway down your ears. If your hair is longer, you should keep your sideburns a little shorter. To determine the length you want, stand in front of the mirror and use your index fingers.

Trimming your sideburns to exactly the same height can be quite a challenge. So don’t be cocky and check the length of your sideburns regularly in this way.

2. Use a beard trimmer

You want to trim your sideburns? The best way to do that is with a beard trimmer (my favourite is the Philips beard trimmer). With the attachments, you can set the desired length yourself. With other beard trimmers, you set the length yourself on the shaving head. Don’t use a razor; it has bigger blades and therefore you can’t be as precise and reach hard-to-reach areas.

Use the beard trimmer regularly. On average, the sideburns should be trimmed every two to three days.

3. Cut from top to bottom and then the other way round

When trimming your beard, first go in the direction of the hair. Then trim from the bottom to the top. Following this sequence is the best way to remove all excess hair and bring your sideburns to one length.

Use a safety razor or razor blades to apply the lines.

4. Use a safety razor or razor blades to apply the lines.

The same applies to your sideburns as to your beard: before you start trimming, make sure your hair is clean. So you always start by washing and drying your beard. This way, gel or other hair products can’t cause problems for the final result.

Trim your sideburns for a neat look

Would you never have thought of trimming your sideburns before reading this article? Then now you have the information you need to do it right. Sideburns play a crucial role in your appearance and therefore deserve the right attention. Well-groomed sideburns contribute to a well-groomed appearance. So get to work!
