Naturally, you want to buy a beard trimmer that allows you to trim your beard to your desired length. So you need a beard trimmer that can meet your desired trim length. Thinking of growing a full beard in the future? Then keep this in mind when choosing the right beard trimmer.
Beard lengths:
- 0.1 mm to 5 mm for stubble
- 5 mm to 10 mm for a short beard
- 10 mm to 40+ mm for a long beard
Way of length setting
There are three ways to set the desired trim length:
- With different attachment combs: fine if you’re looking for an inexpensive beard trimmer, but you do sacrifice convenience. For instance, you have to change the attachment comb, clean it and lose it easily.
- Via mechanical with a dial: this works best. You work with a fixed attachment comb and adjust the trim length via a dial.
- Via mechanical with buttons: the mechanical works the same, but you adjust the trim length via push buttons instead of a dial.
Minimum spacer length
Finally, we have the length between metal blades. What can you choose from and which is best for your type of beard?
- Minimal intermediate steps: the space between the stainless steel blades is zero. This is also known as a precision trimmer; ideal when you want to create an overflow in your beard and add detail to your beard.
- Medium intermediate steps: the space between the stainless steel blades is slightly wider which is especially good for shorter beards.
- Large intervals: you use a beard trimmer with lots of space between the metal blades when you want to trim your beard to one length. Perfect for an even result.

Halfway through your trimming session, the trimmer suddenly stops? There’s nothing more annoying than that. Trim in the shower?
Do you like to trim in the shower? Understandably so, as it prevents a mess at the sink as all loose hairs are discharged through the shower drain. Trimming a stubble works fine in the shower, but for a full or long beard it is better to trim it when the beard hairs are dry.
Either way, the Philips 5000 series BT5515/15 can be used in the shower.
Rinsing the trimmer
A waterproof housing is not only desirable for men who want to trim in the shower, but is also convenient for cleaning your trimmer. You can then rinse the beard trimmer under the tap and get rid of all loose hair in one go.
Suction system for the loose hairs?

If your budget is not too big, the Philips beard trimmers from the 5000 series are a good alternative. The BT5515/15 is the best-selling beard trimmer, while the BT5200/16 is the trimmer with the best value for money, in our opinion.
